Once ON this island

Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune's life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel's heart, and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.

Synopsis: Based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl, Once on This Island is set on a Caribbean island and tells the story of a young girl named Ti Moune. The story unfolds as Ti Moune falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. Guided by the powerful island gods, Ti Moune’s determination and courage are put to the test as she defies tradition and strives to prove that love can conquer all. Her journey of love, self-discovery, and bravery crosses class divides, offering audiences a heartfelt tale of resilience and the transformative power of storytelling. Once on This Island is a tale of resilience, sacrifice, and the magic of the human heart.

Content Note: Once on This Island has some mature themes, including colorism, colonialism, classism, and death.

Audition Procedure:

*Please prepare 16-32 measures (usually a verse and a chorus) of an appropriate audition song and provide sheet music for our pianist. It is best to have your music in a 3-ring binder with as few page turns as possible. (The less the pianist has to worry about your music, the better the audition you will have.) If you have questions or need help putting together sheet music for the audition, you can reach out to our music director, PNOJason@gmail.com. We discourage auditioning a cappella (without a piano).
